American Journal: Fifty Poems for Our Time (2018) selection by Tracy K. Smith

Poetry is not my thing. I just can't get into it. I enjoy listening to slam poetry, or reading poetry that doesn't actually read like poetry— such as The Animals in That Country by Laura Jean McKay, but typical poetry is not my cup of tea.

I'm certain I picked up this work based on the cover, thinking that it would be a collection of urban related poems from across america, but this isn't the case. I want say that I made an honest effort to read each poem, but I didn't. I didn't feel like there was a common enough theme to keep me immersed throughout the entire read. This is unfortunate, insomuch as I paid for this book.

This book, like many others, is a reminder that:

  • I need to be OK with abandoning books earlier
  • I need to not buy any works of poetry
  • I should make a list of DO NOT'S when it comes to reading
